Context & relevance

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects around 1 in 10 women worldwide. One of its many defining characteristics is an irregular or absent menstrual cycle.

Despite its prevalence, most cycle-tracking apps are built around regularity, averages and prediction, assumptions that often fail women with PCOS.

The UX challenge

Existing tracking tools often collect data without providing orientation. For women with PCOS, this can lead to confusion, comparison pressure and a feeling of being “off” rather than supported. The core challenge is not data availability, but how data is framed, connected and translated into meaningful insight ...
this raises the question of how a solution can meaningfully reflect the needs of women with PCOS and irregular cycles, while acknowledging, visualizing and supporting their unique symptoms and rhythms.

My role

I am developing this project as a UX designer with a focus on research, synthesis and information architecture. The intent is to explore how UX can shift cycle tracking away from performance and prediction towards awareness, context and self-trust.

Research snapshot & direction

The cycle as a dynamic condition

Instead of presenting cycles as fixed timelines or rigid schedules, the experience reflects fluctuations over time, helping users see their body as an evolving system rather than a set of metrics.

Integrating mental and physical states

Cycles are not just biological, they are influenced by mood, energy, and mental wellbeing. Connecting physical and mental data supports holistic self-understanding and context-aware tracking.

Visualizing uncertainty

Women with PCOS experience their cycles as irregular and unpredictable. Representing uncertainty instead of hiding it allows users to understand patterns without feeling pressured or “wrong.”
